How to play

  1. A river name above an empty map with coastlines and lakes
Read the name. Underneath is a map with coastlines and lakes, no borders and no labels.
  2. A line being drawn across the map with one finger
Draw the course in one stroke. Start at whichever end you like, because a line drawn backwards counts the same.
  3. The reveal: the real course drawn over the player's line, with the distance in kilometres
Let go. The real course draws itself over your line, and the number says how far apart the two run.

The reveal

93 km off the real course

The stroke runs in the right corridor almost the whole way. What it loses are the bends, and the Nile has one big one. Source ›

Start at the delta east of Alexandria and work south, not the other way round. The Nile is the rare big river that runs north. Between Khartoum and Egypt it makes one wide detour to the south-west, then straightens north again.

Questions

What is a map drawing game?
A game where you draw geography from memory. In Which way? you trace a river or a mountain range on a map with no names, and then the real course appears over yours.
What is a game where you guess geography?
Which way? is one: a name, a map with no labels, and one stroke. You draw where you think the river or the mountain range runs, and the reveal lays the real geometry over your line and measures the gap in kilometres.
Is it free?
Yes, and you never need an account. Past days live in an archive; your first archive day is free.
How is a round scored?
In kilometres: for a line, the gap to the real course, measured in both directions so overshooting costs as much as leaving a piece out. A ruler drawn straight across the map scores nothing.
Can I share my result?
After round five. The card lists the five names with the distance you were off, and your typical miss under them.
Are there new rounds every day?
Five a day, the same five for everyone. They change at midnight UTC.
